Donor Advised Funds

Streamline Your Charitable Giving

Are you looking for a way to benefit the University of Notre Dame both now and in the future? Would you like to streamline and simplify your annual and lifetime charitable giving? The University of Notre Dame Donor Advised Fund (ND DAF) might be a great solution for you.

The ND DAF is a powerful philanthropic vehicle that leverages the Notre Dame Endowment, one of the best-performing endowments in higher education, to maximize the impact of your gift to Notre Dame as well as other qualified charitable organizations. The ND DAF is an easy, flexible way to diversify your charitable giving and legacy.

The ND DAF offers an alternative to the expense and legal complexity of operating a private foundation while simplifying your philanthropic giving. Notre Dame manages the administration and distributions without charging administrative or transaction fees.

By establishing a ND DAF, you enable Notre Dame to receive, invest, and administer gifts to the University and to make distributions to other qualified charitable organizations, according to your recommendations. Later on, your children can carry on your legacy of giving.

Invest with the Notre Dame Endowment

One of the most important advantages of the ND DAF is having your gift assets invested with the Notre Dame Endowment. A donor advised fund invested with the Notre Dame Endowment has the potential for significant growth, as the Endowment has historically and substantially outperformed market indices. With an 10.7% rate of return over the past 20 fiscal years and a 6.6% return over the previous 10 years, Notre Dame's Endowment is one of the best performing endowments in all of higher education and is today considered one of the strongest institutional investment pools in the world.

Enjoy Attractive Benefits

  • Receive an immediate income-tax deduction based on the fair market value of your gift to Notre Dame. Avoid capital-gain tax on gifts of appreciated assets, and remove assets from your taxable estate.
  • Centralize the investment and administration of your gift assets and maximize those assets through Notre Dame's expert investment services with no management fees.

  • Enjoy the stability of investing your gift assets with a fiscally sound institution. Notre Dame is one of the few universities to hold a "Aaa" credit rating from Moody's Investor Service.
  • Make distributions on your timetable.
  • Make a significant impact on Notre Dame and your favorite charities.
  • When you pass away, you may provide your adult children advisory privileges, to prompt the continuation of your legacy.

Your investment in a ND DAF will also qualify you to become a member of the Stephen Theodore Badin Guild, a giving society established to honor all those who make Notre Dame a part of their personal legacy by creating a planned gift. Contact us to learn more about becoming a member of the Badin Guild.

How the Notre Dame Donor Advised Fund Works:

  • You make an irrevocable gift of cash, securities or real property, with a minimum value of $500,000 to fund a donor advised fund at the University of Notre Dame. You may also transfer assets from existing charitable foundations and donor advised funds held at other institutions to Notre Dame to establish a ND DAF.
  • A ND DAF is created in the name of your choice. Assets are invested in the Notre Dame Endowment.
  • Each ND DAF is comprised of two separate funds. At least 50% of your initial gift to the ND DAF must go to the Retained Fund, which is used to support areas of your choosing at Notre Dame. The Distributable Fund is the portion given to the ND DAF which is eligible for distribution to other qualified charities.
  • The assets in your ND DAF grow tax-free.
  • You make recommendations on gifts to be made from your ND DAF anytime. Minimum distributions from your Distributable Fund are $5,000 per charity and may be made to charities that do not conflict with Notre Dame's values as a Catholic university. Transfers from your Retained Fund to any Notre Dame program or priority have no minimum.
  • You receive a letter acknowledging your gift as well as quarterly fund activity reports.
  • When you pass away, your adult children may recommend charitable gifts from your Distributable Fund for a 10-year term. The Retained Fund may be designated for a particular priority at Notre Dame or it may be applied by the University to an area of greatest need.

More on Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund has several advantages when compared to a private foundation. The start-up time and cost are minimal for donor advised funds, and gifts to donor advised funds are generally deductible at fair market value. A donor advised fund is also not subject to the distribution requirements and certain excise taxes faced by private foundations.

As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the University cannot make distributions to high schools, prep schools, or two-year colleges, in that such distributions may be in violation of NCAA by-laws.
