Erin Hayes '18 Scholarship Recipient

Erin Hayes '18 Scholarship Recipient

Erin Hayes is a Class of 2018 Political Science and Arabic double major. Hailing from Rochester, New York, Erin's interest in Notre Dame sparked when she visited her brother on campus during his freshman year.

Notre Dame quickly became her first choice school, and she was thrilled to be accepted. However, the generosity of a planned gift made it truly possible for Erin to begin her studies at Notre Dame. Erin was a recipient of the Joan Hoffman DeCrane Scholarship, which is awarded to highly talented students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75, are on the Dean's List, and are found deserving of financial support.

Erin was amazed at the resources available to Notre Dame students, and during her four years took advantage of every opportunity. During her sophomore year, she studied in Washington, D.C. and discovered her calling to work for the State Department as Foreign Service Officer. In pursing this career, she studied in Morocco the semester before her senior year, living with a Moroccan host family. She hopes to go back at some point to improve her Arabic. For her Senior Thesis research, she received a grant to travel to Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 2019, Erin participated in the American University in Cairo's Presidential Internship Program in Egypt. She is grateful to Notre Dame's Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement for their assistance throughout the application process.

Erin was also active on campus. She resided in Walsh Hall, where she served on the Hall council and as Chair of the Service Committee. The sense of community she felt through residential life at Notre Dame was a highlight of her four years.

Erin notes that all of these experiences were due to the generosity of the Notre Dame family and she is so appreciative of her time at Our Lady's University.
