Raul Lema '18 Scholarship Recipient

Raul Lema '18 Scholarship Recipient

Raul Lema is a Class of 2018 Mechanical Engineering major. He was a recipient of the Joan Hoffman DeCrane Scholarship for highly talented students who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75, are on the Dean's List and are worthy of financial support.

Coming to Notre Dame from his home country of Bolivia, Raul prepared himself for some culture shock. Today, he reflects on how his four years at Notre Dame were some of his best, and how it took no time at all for Notre Dame to feel like home. Without a doubt, Raul would do it all over again.

Raul's mother had attended an American school in Bolivia, so Raul was raised speaking both Spanish and English. When it was time to make a decision about college, he set his sights on schools in the United States. Raul applied to several universities, but quickly learned they would not offer enough, if any, financial aid. Friends of the Lema family, who are Notre Dame Alumni, encouraged him to apply to Our Lady's University. Raul was accepted, and thanks to planned gift benefactors such as Joan Hoffman DeCrane, received a four-year scholarship that made it possible for him to receive a Notre Dame education.

Raul found the Notre Dame family to be kind and with good values. Football was a completely new experience, one that enabled him to form friendships outside of class. He found the curriculum academically challenging, and that his peers were truly focused on their education and pursuing something better for themselves and the world, a trait unique to Notre Dame.

Raul wants benefactors to Notre Dame to know that his experience under the Dome made a huge difference in his life, and he would like to see the same happen for others. Raul feels strongly that people from all over the world deserve a chance to receive this education of mind and heart.

Since graduating, Raul has been pursuing his Ph. D. in nanomanufacturing at the University of Texas at Austin. It is hard for Raul to express the immense gratitude he has for members of the ND family who provided financial support through his scholarship. He is so thankful for their generosity, without which he would never have had this incredible opportunity.
